Fifty Shades of Grey Review

Friday, May 4, 2012

I had been hearing so much about this series lately that I finally succumbed and read it.
All three books in one night, back to back.  And perhaps that makes my perception of it different from those who spaced them out, but here are my thoughts on this titillating trilogy.

1. Let's not mince words, it's in the "Erotic" category for a reason.  It's literary porn.
2. As I would imagine is the case with most forms of porn, when you take out the steamy parts you're left with a seriously lacking plot-line.

3.  I equate this series to the X-rated equivalent of Twilight, though instead of being a vampire the main character is a sexual sadist.
4. The author really loves using the word "obtuse".
5. Reading the books back to back you begin to notice recycled situations and conversations.  It gets old fast.
6. I honestly like the concept of these books and I think the author could have done so much more with it.  I hope that whoever writes the screenplay does it right and overhauls it into something I would actually want to watch.

Just one lady's opinion...

  2. I have been dying to read these books because of how excellent I heard they were, but now that I have a more clear picture I'll probably hold off. So glad you wrote this!

  4. Good to know...I have been hearing lots about the book so I was wondering if I should read it. I think I'll pass...I like some good steamy scenes in a book but I think I can do without the "literary porn." Thanks sis!

  5. I'm on the second book now and defintely notice the trend you are talking about.

I heard that the author actually got inspired by the Twilight series to write the story.

  6. I am currently reading the 3rd book and I would have to disagree. Yes some of the scenes are a repeat, but similar as in Twilight in my opinion. But after the first book the love story really develops and I think the 3rd book is by far the best out of the three! Not literary genius but a good hot and steamy love novel for sure! And as it states in the book, the main character is not a sadist, but rather an emotionally damaged human that finds solace and healing in the love of his life. It's not for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  7. I bought the first book because I'd seen it all over the internet. On instagram and pinterest and bloggers were reading it, so I thought "what the hey...I'll give it a try".... then I heard it was porn like. Now I'm not so thrilled to read it.

  8. i bought and read all three and enjoyed it. i agree - it definitely isnt a literary masterpiece per se, but for those looking for an easy read, it was good. i guess this mindless read was a good substitute for the mindless tv i watch (at least for those couple of weeks)! =)

TOTALLY agree with #6! i read an article about the worst and best choices for possible christian grey actors. i hope they make them better than the books as well.

  11. I just started reading the first book this week. So far, I'm slightly interested but not really captivated by the book or the characters. It's just "okay". I'm going to keep reading, so hopefully it gets better. I appreciate your review. :)

  12. The redundancy and recycling of scenes and dialog is TORTURE! Has anyone heard of the trilogy BEAUTY, written by Anne Rice? Ms. James seems to have, along with a little Jane Ayre and Larry Flynt! It could have been 1 good book. And Christian is so unrealistic!!!! So young, SOOOOOOO rich and he never works. I don 't think a CEO of that caliber spends his days chasing and screwing his sophomoric girlfriend. I read all 3 back to back and the repetition was so obvious/boring. I loved some of the "situations" she describes! All for good spanking or talk of same...

  13. Im actually enjoying the books (Im on my first). If you're going to form an opinion about a book you should read it first. No one person views are going to be the same. This book is great! Read it for yourself.

  14. I have nothing against a good literary piece of ass, but I was hesitant to feed into the hype, lol.I don't mind graphic sex scenes as long as they are supporting a phenomenal storyline. Porn is all about the sex. Sounds like this is the same. My sister was pretty luke warm about the writing.
My humble experience with people who fall head over heels for a books like Twilight and read them 20 times each? They aren't normally avid readers. They are so shocked with the feeling of being pulled into a storyline that they think it is the book. It must be the best thing ever written, right? But the truth is that there are lots of great books out there. No need to obsess over a certain series or certain genre. I read Twilight, then I gave them away to a cousin. They were good, but 20 times? no way.The literary world is just as susceptible to trends as the movie business. It should be interesting to see where this trends leads. The vampire thing has been done, angels, werewolves, fairies, and now bondage. NICE.

  15. I am on book 3 and so far have enjoyed what I have read. Yes it is redundant but
I enjoy the love between them, it is so intense. It's what every one would want in a relationship, yet we all know we live in the real world. It bought back memories of when i was young and more daring.Plus it has helped spice up a 29 yr marriage. every time my husband comes home I am reading and he knows I'm reading about sex so the fire is already started!! Read them I know you will like them…no love them!

  17. I have only read book no. 1, but I read it in one day, which leads me to believe Ms. EL James wrote it in less than six weeks! So very trite as compared to the well-written, tongue-in-cheek, sexual romp through Hollywood between a thirty-eight year old Muslim terrorist wannabe and a funny, celibate, post-menopausal grandma! THE YEAR I LEARNED TO TEXT; Why am I Having Sex with a Muslim in My Basement? by Juliet Montague.
I laughed, cried, and learned to, well, masturbate more competently.

  18. I just finished the 1st book and I enjoyed it. It's a sexy read for a mature adult audience and I am planning to read the other books. Its not a masterpiece by far but, I took it for what it's worth and I'm glad the author was brave enough to write the book for my entertainment.
